![]() This is a difference between the X ordinate of your endpoint and the X ordinate of the start point. If your start point lies 502 pixels from the extreme left and 983 pixels from the extreme top, Photoshop will show you 502 in the X-axis and 983 from the Y-axis. This is just a geometrical representation of your start point in X and Y axis. I am going to explain each and every options one by one. This options generally look very much different from the traditional option bar to a novice. Below is a screenshot of the option bar that you should see if you are using Photoshop CC. Like all other Photoshop tools, this tool also comes with its own options/settings. Now let’s move to Section 2 where we will deal with all the advanced techniques that we can do with Ruler Tool. Simple, isn’t it? This tool is pretty much simpler as compared to most of the Photoshop tools. The distance between the two pixels is approximately 357 pixels. Now to measure the distance between two points, all you need to do is hold down your left mouse click at the start point and then drag your mouse to the end point and then release your mouse button.Īnd here is the result now. To activate this tool, all you need is to grab it from the tool panel of press Shift+I again and again until it comes. Section 1 deals with the basic of this tool while Section 2 deals with the advanced use of this tool. This tutorial is divided into two sections. This tool is kind of hidden and does not get enough popularity if compared with it’s importance.įor the whole tutorial, I’ll be talking about the Ruler Tool and its importance. You can use the grid tool for this but Photoshop also provides a tool that is exclusively built to measure the distance. ![]() It can be the distance between two buttons while designing a website, size of a waist and so on. Click OK on the Rotate Canvas pop up and it will produce the same result as clicking on “straighten layer” tab. Many times in Photoshop you need to measure the distance between two points. We will have to crop that part out using the crop tool.Īnd here is our final straightened image.Īnother way to straighten the image after drawing the line is to go to “Image” in your tool bar at the top, then “Image rotation” and click on “Arbitary”. Now the image appears to be straight but there is white background that we of course do not need. When we do this, we are telling Photoshop to straighten the tilted line that we just draw and rotate the entire image with it accordingly. But since the line appears to be okay, we will click on the “Straighten Layer” tab. The second tab “Clear” would clear the line that we just draw in case we want to do it again. Now with that done, look for a tab that reads “Straighten Layer” on top of your screen. I would click on the left side of the image, hold the mouse button down and draw a straight line to the right. In our case here, I would use the spot where the water meets the mountains as a reference. Once you have the ruler tool selected, look for an object in your image that should be straight. Another way is to use Shift + I command from your keyboard to shuffle between the tools in that nest. Keyboard shortcut for ruler tool is “I” but it is also the shortcut for all other tools in that nest which means you will have to still select the ruler tool from fly menu after pressing I. You can also right click on the nest and select. To select it, left click on the nest, hold down your mouse button for a second and select the ruler tool from the fly menu. ![]() The ruler tool is nested in the same area as the Eye Dropper Tool. With the introduction of ruler tool in CS5, this task became a lot easier. Up until CS5, there was no easy way to straighten crooked images in Photoshop and people had to work around it a little bit. But for argument’s sake, let us assume that I do not want to delete this image and would rather straighten and keep it. Usually in cases like this, people just delete images that are so badly crooked and only keep the good ones. It doesn’t take a genius to guess that this image is highly tilted. Let us understand this better using the following image as an example. The big question however is why you would want to do that. Its function is also very simple you use the ruler tool to draw a non-printable line on an image. Ruler Tool is probably one of the simplest tools that Photoshop has to offer.
